Han Kang’s novel 'Human Acts' tells the story of those who lost their lives on the streets of Gwangju in May 1980. The memories of Geumnam-ro, the Provincial Government Building, and the nameless people who fell there still live on throughout this city. This journey is not merely a sightseeing tour. It is a time to walk these streets and witness firsthand what happened here 46 years ago.
The roots of Korean democracy took hold in Gwangju. The May 18 Democratic Uprising was a citizens’ resistance against military dictatorship, and the scars and courage it left behind are a place of remembrance that Korean society must revisit whenever it discusses democracy today. During the commemorative week of May 16–17, we will stand right in the heart of that historic site.

한강의 소설 『소년이 온다』는 1980년 5월, 광주의 거리에서 목숨을 잃은 이들의 이야기를 담습니다. 소설 속 금남로, 도청, 그리고 이름 없이 쓰러진 사람들의 기억은 지금도 이 도시 곳곳에 살아 있습니다. 이번 여정은 단순한 관광이 아닙니다. 46년 전 이 거리에서 무슨 일이 있었는지를 두 발로 확인하는 시간입니다.
한국 민주주의의 뿌리는 광주에서 자랐습니다. 5·18민주화운동은 군부 독재에 맞선 시민들의 저항이었고, 그 상처와 용기는 오늘날 한국 사회가 민주주의를 이야기할 때마다 반드시 거쳐야 할 기억의 장소입니다. 우리는 기념주간인 5월 16일-17일, 그 현장 한가운데에 서게 됩니다.
